Welcome to meddelarfrihet.nu

This page has two purposes. First of all we are going to use this as a forum where we present arguments in favour of the introduction of a principle of public access to official records and the right to inform, within the European Union. That is the right for the citizens to take part of all official EU documents and the right for the civil servants of the EU to give information to journalists, writers, politicians etc without having to fear persecution, reprisals or judicial consequences.

Secondly we will offer an e-mail address where EU civil servants may, anonymously if they want to, send information concerning incongruities, crooked dealings, corruption or the like.

Europe's most famous whistleblower supports the initiative

In 1998, as official of the European Commission, I blew the whistle on irregularities and the lack of responsibilities within the European Commission, my employer. As a result of this, the European Parliament refused to grant budget discharge and after an external expert report a few months later, the entire Commission had to step down. Since then, new so-called whistle blowing procedures have been installed in the EU-institutions. They don't work and whistleblowers continue to be harassed and ignored by the authorities.

I have written two books and many articles on my adventures and am, since 2004, an elected member of the European Parliament. As such, I have been in contact with many, many whistleblowers, in the EU institutions, in my home country and from all over the world. Whistleblowers are victimized and subject to terrifying processes, also in our western Europeans democracies. Therefore it is necessary to launch initiatives to guarantee real protection to whistleblowers. Together with Carl Schlyter and several other MEP's, I will launch such initiatives during our present mandate in the European Parliament.
